US Weight was founded in 1996 by Larry Mitchell and Matt Buchannan who were both entrepreneurs working in Olney, Illinois. The two partners purchased some of the fitness related assets from RoadMaster Corporation which was one of the largest sporting goods companies at the time. Some of RoadMarter’s brands included Vitamaster, DP, Ajay,Healthmaster, Universal , and Flexible Flyer. US Weight focused initially on the fitness market since it acquired the fitness weight manufacturing technology from RoadMaster originally developed by Diversified Products (DP) in the 1960s. DP pioneered the concept of nonferrous weight sets encased in blow-molded polyethylene which significantly broadened the reach and appeal of fitness equipment and usage in the USA. These newly designed weights did not rust, did not scuff floors, were easy to handle, and were much lower cost than traditional cast iron fitness weights. DP branded these innovate weight sets Orbatron. US Weight utilized the DP technology and experience to quickly become a success securing distribution at Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Sears, and others.
Escalade, Inc. purchased US Weight in 2001 from Larry and Matt to further expand its sporting goods business. James Eaton started exhibiting his sculpture at art fairs almost 30 years ago, about the same time that the 10’ x 10’ canopy came into common use. With the purchase and use of his first canopy it became apparent that some method of keeping the canopy anchored in windy situations was necessary.
On open ground and grass, staking into the dirt and using ropes to attach the canopy was an option but on concrete and asphalt the problem was not as simple to solve. His initial design was a stackable 15 pound cast iron weight that would fit around the legs of his canopy which were 1” square. He later upgraded to a new canopy which had 1 1/2 “ diameter legs and realized that he needed to modify his initial design to fit the new legs. Eventually he arrived at the Eaton design that, with the help of special hold tight clips, allowed the weights to be used on any canopy with up to 2” square or round legs.
Fellow exhibitors began to notice his new weight design and asked where they could buy sets for themselves. Thus began the Eaton canopy weight business.
That brings us to today's canopyweights.com where you can find professional, user designed products for todays needs! The Ingot, Tailgater, & Eaton original are made in our modern plant here in the USA. The Cornerstone is our design but is sourced to our demanding standards outside of the U.S.
Eaton Canopy Weights are now being used by individuals and organizations far removed from the art festival industry. They have been purchased by mobile marketing companies, community health services, professional sports teams, government agencies, military sponsored events, farmers marketeers, tailgaters and many other organizations and individuals who use canopies.
